Sri Lanka have deservedly acquired a huge reputation for being world-beaters at cricket. In fact, anyone glancing at the 132-10 by Japan would be thinking that Sri Lanka had succeeded in bowling the Japanese out for 132! Alas, this cricket score is indeed a rugby score. It would be easy to pay homage to the superior rugby skills of the Japanese warriors and to scoff at Sri Lanka’s apparent puny response. However, the Sri Lankans are clearly on a learning curve, and we all would love to see these rugby minnows persevere. After all, it was only thirty-two years ago that Sri Lanka stepped out into the brave new world of test cricket, and one can only admire how the island state has rapidly progressed from lightweights to international heavyweights. Perhaps all things are possible for those who persevere.
