With Ireland’s home ground under reconstruction at Lansdowne Road, rugby — a non-Gaelic sport — was being played at Croke Park, home of the Gaelic Athletic Association. The visit of England on 24th February 2007 and the singing of “God save the Queen” was a national disgrace in the eyes of some, a reconciliation of equals in the eyes of others.

The English sang with heart, but the Irish response — in song and in the 43 to 13 mauling which followed — revealed a clear first among equals on this occasion.
